Ian Scott Massie

I began printmaking while a student, initially influenced by early 20th century poster design. I became fascinated by reduction screen printing: stencil work, painting on the screen, mixing colour on the squeegee – all the ways that can create a picture of emotional power. My work focuses on the spirit of place found in a variety of built environments – pilgrimage places, bridges, industrial ruins, ancient landscapes – edge places. These influences have come through a number of experiences and projects including exploring the locations of medieval shrines, working for an industrial museum and travelling to remote bronze age sites.
