Scattered amongst our landscape in varied states of decay and dereliction are ruins, curious historical objects, fascinating and even seductive in their beauty. Alongside their visceral representation of human endeavour, at times touching the sublime, they stand as a reminder of the past and a warning for the future which must be heeded. Of course, Abandoned buildings do not stand in isolation, but form part of our environment, sites of ecological interest, and in some cases, may even define the landscape in which we discover them. Jemma Gunning’s practice documents our fading heritage, providing us a portal into the past.
